People of the Big Voice:
From 1879 to 1942, Charles Van Shaick photographed Ho-Chunk families at his Black River Falls studio, producing hundreds of images of a people who overcame unimaginable hardships and forced removals to return to their Wisconsin homeland. More than 300 of these images were recently published in the book, People of the Big Voice. Commentator Tom Jones tells us some of the stories behind the photos and what they mean to his people.
Tom Jones is a photographer and enrolled member of the Ho-Chunk Nation. He’s the co-author of People of the Big Voice. The book just won a USA Best Books Award for Photography.
