Finnish Saunas

One of life’s great pleasures resides in the Finnish sauna - sitting in 180-degree heat and throwing cool water on oven-hot stones. Wisconsin’s Finnish immigrants brought their sauna tradition with them to America, constructing saunas along with all the other traditional farm and home buildings around Lake Superior. These photographs showcase our Northwoods sauna heritage and accompany Arnold Alanen’s reminiscences of his own family’s saunas.
