Blessing of the Fleet:

We head to Bayfield, where fishing boats, sailboats, tugs and even kayaks assembled in the city harbor recently for the annual Blessing of the Fleet. For more than fifty years, clergy from the Apostle Islands have gathered in June to bless local boats for safe passage and a prosperous season on Lake Superior.

Ice is a big part of everyday winter life in Bayfield, Wisconsin. Especially for the hardy commuters who ride the Madeline Island ferry. Producer Todd Witter took a ride on one of the last trips to the island this season and has this story.

Today, while sports fans all over the world have their eyes on the Winter Olympics in Vancouver, Laura Podgornik from our Superior bureau headed north to Bayfield for a different kind of sports event. She met a couple of competitors in the annual Apostle Islands Sled Dog Race and sent us this sound portrait.
