Civil War Malt House:

This weekend beer lovers will gather in Madison for the annual Great Taste of the Midwest. At one Madison bar, beer lovers have been enjoying some of Wisconsin’s best brews for more than 150 years.

Civil War Songs:

150 years ago, Wisconsin soldiers slogged through the second year of the Civil War. Madison-based band Count This Penny set the letters of two Wisconsin soldiers to music as part of a unique Civil War arts project at the Wisconsin Veterans Museum. Today, band members Amanda and Allen Rigell share the song and story of Walter Persons.

A hundred and fifty years ago, Wisconsin soldiers entered the second year of the Civil War. Now, some of their stories have been set to music as part of a Civil War arts project at the Wisconsin Veterans Museum. Singer-songwriters Amanda and Allen Rigell of the band Count This Penny share a song inspired by one soldier’s letters home.

Today, we mark the 150th anniversary of the beginning of the Civil War with a story from Madison’s Joyce Salter Johnson. The institution of slavery is a living memory in her family. She grew up in a town that was founded by freed slaves – including her own great-grandparents.

Joyce Salter Johnson is a family historian and the author of The Early Black Settlers of Stephenson County, Illinois.

Civil War Week: Nathaniel Rollins, POW:

Nathaniel Rollins was a Captain in Company H of the 2nd Wisconsin Infantry. Taken prisoner at Gettysburg, Rollins spent much of the remainder of the war in Libby Prison in Richmond, Virginia. Only six weeks after being released, he wrote this reminiscence of his time as prisoner of war read by Peter Sobol.

In 1864, eighteen men from Brodhead enlisted in the Union Army as the band of the 1st Brigade. Today, the sights and sounds of that original band live on in a modern 1st Brigade Band, the oldest recreated Civil War brass band in the country. Member and former band leader Dan Woolpert shares their story.

Civil War Week: Emilie Quiner’s Diary:

Emilie Quiner was a 21-year-old Madison schoolteacher when the Civil War broke out in 1861. Wanting to feel more useful to the war, Quiner went to work as a nurse in a Union hospital in Tennessee in 1863. Michele Good reads from Quiner’s diary.
