Rediscovering a Sacred Island:
Today, a visit to a place some members of the Ojibwe nation call “the heart of the Lac Du Flambeau.” Strawberry Island has been sacred to the Ojibwe for several hundred years, but it’s also rumored to be haunted. Now, some tribal members are trying to bring life back to the island. Brian Bull went along with his tape recorder.
Lac du Flambeau is the location of sacred Strawberry Island which is recognized by the National Register of Historical Places. This island is the place where the last battle between the Sioux and the Ojibwe was fought in 1745. In 1966, the island was identified through an archaeological survey as a place with artifacts and remains dating back to 200 BC.
