Lost and Found Language:

Cinco de Mayo is the annual celebration of Mexican heritage, and one of the fastest growing holidays in America. Today, Wisconsin poet and school principal Oscar Mireles shares the story of his struggle to hold onto his first language – Spanish. His poem is called “Lost and Found Language.”

Oscar Mireles is the principal of Omega School in Madison. He’s been writing poems for 25 years and is the editor of two anthologies, called “I Didn’t Know There Were Latinos in Wisconsin.”

Oneida Husking Bee:

For the Oneida Nation, corn is not just food, it’s culture. The Oneida grew white corn for centuries in New York and replanted it, along with their culture, in Wisconsin in the 1820s. And every fall, the Oneida harvest their traditional white flint corn for sustenance and to remember their tradition.

Vickie Cornelius and Kyle Wisneski work with the Oneida Community Integrated Food Systems project. WPR’s Scott Clark brought us their voices.

Vintage Baseball:

The Brewers are red-hot so far this season, seemingly on their way to fall glory. Baseball has been America’s game since the 19th century, though the modern game looks quite different from its roots in small towns. The original game lives on, though, in the growing sport of vintage base ball. Team manager Marty Perkins tells us about Old World Wisconsin’s team, the Eagle Diamonds.
