Ron Corn Jr. is one of less than 20 fluent speakers of the Menominee language, and throughout his life has taught the language to others. Ron’s devotion to saving the language is so strong that he made the difficult and family changing decision to quit his full-time job where he taught Menominee language in order to spend more time raising his youngest daughter, Mimikwaeh, with the language through immersion. He hopes that she will be the first child in over a generation whose first language is Menominee and not English.

This story is part of “The Ways,” an ongoing series on culture and language from Native communities around the central Great Lakes. It was produced by Finn Ryan of the Wisconsin Media Lab.

Two hundred years after his birth (March 7th) his influence is still being felt in our state. That is, if you know how to “Look for Lapham.”

Birkebeiner:

Thousands of skiers will take to the trails this weekend for the legendary American Birkebeiner. It’s the largest cross country ski marathon in North America, running 50 kilometers from Cable to Hayward, Wisconsin. Now, climate change, including warmer winter temperatures, threatens the future of the Birkebeiner. Finn Ryan produced this portrait of last year’s race.

On Clear Ice

When Wisconsin Public Television graphic designer Jennifer Hadley took her daughter out to skate and watch ice boats racing on Madison’s Lake Mendota, she was amazed out how clear the ice was. She put together this video incorporating some amazing images she shot with some commentary from lake expert UW Emeritus Professor John Magnuson.

Producer, Aubrey Ralph, puts his reputation in the trash while producing his piece, “The Society for Creative Anachronism.”
